PHILADELPHIA: THE VINE STREET EXPRESSWAY

By the late 1960s, ~14,000 families had been displaced in Philadelphia due to federally-funded freeway construction and “urban renewal” schemes. Despite making up 26% of the total population of Philadelphia in 1960, 72% of those displaced were families of color.

Seen here is the construction of I-676, the Vine Street Expressway (before its final completion in 1991) and some of the surrounding “urban renewal” projects.
